Configuring your Email in Thunderbird

First off.. for those of you who don’t know what Thunderbird is, it’s a free email application which is quite similar to MS Outlook (in my opinion). You can download Thundbird from their website »

Once downloaded you need to install the software. And then add in your email settings by following the instructions below.

How to Configure Thunderbird

Go to Tools -> Account Settings

Go to Tools -> Account Settings...
Click the Account Actions button -> Add Mail Account…

Click on Account Actions -> Add Mail Account
Enter your name, email address and password (these will have been sent to you by Cookie Web)
Make sure you check the ‘Remember password’ box (as you don’t want to enter your password every time you open Thunderbird)
Click the Continue button.
Mozilla automatically searches for configuration but it’s best to manually configure your account so click on the Manual configbutton.
Click the Manual Config button
On the Manual Configuration screen…
- Beside Incoming:
  - choose POP3 from the dropdown menu
  - under Server Hostname – enter the POP3 settings that Cookie Web sent to you
  - leave Port, SSL and Authentication as is – the defaults are ok
- Outgoing:
  - defaults to SMTP (you don’t have any options to change this) – this is ok
  - under Server Hostname – enter the SMTP settings that Cookie Web sent to you
  - leave Port, SSL and Authentication as is – the defaults are ok
- Username:
  - enter your email address here e.g. mary@mywebsite.com
- Click on the Re-test button to test that your settings work ok.
Enter POP3, SMTP and Username

Congratulations – your email has been configured. Now you can send and receive emails from Thunderbird.

Keep a Copy of your Mail on the Server

If you would like to keep a copy of your emails on the server then you have one final step to complete.

Open up the Server Settings screen for your new email account.
About half way down the screen you’ll see Leave messages on server. Tick this check box. And tick the box beside Until I delete them.

How to Send an Email Newsletter using Mailchimp

Each newsletter email is called a ‘Campaign’. Click on the Campaigns link at the top of the page
Create Campaign – choose the regular ‘ol campaign
Choose the mailing list that you would like to send the campaign (i.e. your email newsletter) to. Click the Send to entire list button
Check your Campaign Info -> you’ll probably want to update the message subject. The rest of the info here is usually ok as is.
Click NEXT at the top of the page
Choose your template – (if we have created a custom template for you the template will appear in this list) -> hover over the image and click the ‘Select‘ button
Enter the text for your campaign (i.e. your email newsletter).
When you are finished editing your campaign (i.e. your email newsletter) click the NEXT button at the top of the screen
Click the ‘Copy Text from HTML’ to make sure all your new text is also available in plain html format
Click the NEXT button at the top of the screen
On the final screen, check that all the panels are green. If there are any errors the panels will be red and you must go back and fix them. Check the information to make sure everything is correct.
We recommend sending a test email to yourself to double check that everything looks ok. Click the ‘Send a test’ link at the bottom of the page.

Enter your email address and click the ‘Send test’ button
check the email once it arrives in your Email Inbox (e.g. in Gmail, Outlook, etc)

If you are happy with everything go back into Mailchimp and click on the Send Now button.

Formatting your phone number for iPhone

When people visit your website on smartphones e.g. iPhone you probably want them to be able to click on your phone number and have it dial directly from their phone, right?

Well that’s easy. Just format your phone numbers like this +countrycode areacode phonenumber

Now that you have a new website and a new email address you’ll want to be able to send and receive emails. There are a few different options you can use when accessing your email and we would suggest using the option that you’re most used to.

Accessing your Email

Through Outlook – If you use MS Outlook or Outlook Express you can follow this tutorial to set it up with your new email address – Configuring your Email in Outlook

Through Thunderbird- If you use Thunderbird you can follow this tutorial to set it up with your new email address – Configuring your Email in Thunderbird

Through Gmail – If you already use gmail and would like to receive your emails through your Gmail account you can follow this tutorial to set it up – Importing your Email into Gmail

Using Webmail – you can access your email using a web browser e.g. Internet Explorer. Login here https://cp.blacknight.com/webmail/651/parse.php and enter your username and your password (which will have been sent to you). Create a Link to Jump to Another Part of the Same Page

The code involved to make it happen

When in your WordPress Editor you need to find the place where you want your link to be and place some code as shown below, this is called an anchor.

You have to take note what you have called your anchor (#cookie) and find the place you want the link to jump to.
When you have located where you want the link to jump, you place this piece of code just before the word. The ‘name’ has to be the same name as your anchor.

Clearing your browser cache

This article is about how to clear your internet browser cache, sometimes when you do not do this it can slow up your internet browsing.

The most common way to do this is to press CTRL and F5, this will refresh the page fully
For internet explorer you will have to go into ‘Tools’, then ‘Internet Options’ and choose ‘Delete..’.

For FireFox you will have to go into ‘Tools’, then ‘Options’ and chose ‘Clear Now’.

For Google Chrome you will have to go into ‘Tools’, then ‘Options’ and select ‘Clear Browsing data…’.

Adding Images to Your Article

In every blog or article on WordPress its good to have images on a page, it gives the user a better experience and also gives a bit of style to your article or blog.

Adding Images

In the text editor place your cursor where you want the image to appear.
Click the ‘Add an image’ icon above in your text editor.

A pop up box should appear and you can either select an image from your computer or you can go to your gallery.

Once you have selected your image you will have some options to fill out.

From here you can select if you want your image to align left or align right. Also you can select the size and weather you want a link on the image.

Once this information is filled out you can go ahead and select ‘Insert into post’ at the bottom of the form as shown above.
Once this is done, you will be back at your text editor.

How to get to your business page

You log into your personal Facebook profile page.
In the top right hand corner there is a drop down.
You will be giving the option to “Use Facebook as page”

Once you click this a pop up will show up of all your Facebook Business Pages.

Select the Facebook business page. Once in your business page select “Edit Page” on the top right corner.
Go to “Your settings” and turn off “Posting preferences”

Once your done with your Facebook Business page you go to the top right drop down again and select “Switch back to your name“

Embedding a YouTube Video on WordPress 3.1+

Embedding a video in WordPress 3.1 and later versions is even easier than before. Follow these easy steps to display your video on your website.

NOTE: for older versions of WordPress (up to version 3) please see this article on how to embed a YouTube video on your website using WordPress 3.0 and lower

Step 1: Open your Web Page

Log into the admin area of your website.
Go to Pages or Posts and find the article where you would like to display your video. Click on the title of the article or the Edit link so that you are in edit mode for the page.
Click your cursor on the spot on the page where you would like to add your video.
Now you’re all set – let’s go and get the video link from YouTube.

Step 2: Get your Video Link

Open a new browser window or tab.
Go to YouTube.com and find the video you would like to display on your website.
Directly under the video you will see these buttons
Click on the Share button.
This opens up a box with some options to link to the video, embed, email, share on Facebook, Bebo, Google+, etc. We want to display the video on our website so we’re going to choose the Link to this video: option.
Copy the highlighted link
Right click on the highlighed link and choose Copy. In this case my video link is http://youtu.be/I-a29LOMDTY

Step 3: Add the Video Link to your Page

View the browser window / tab where your website and article is open in Edit mode.
Make sure your cursor is clicked where you want to display the video.
Paste the YouTube video link on the page (this is the link that we copied earlier in Step 2)
That’s it! WordPress does the rest

Just a couple of things to note…

Your link must be on a line of it’s own.

For example:

Correct:

http://youtu.be/I-a29LOMDTY

Incorrect:

Watch my video here http://youtu.be/I-a29LOMDTY

Your video link must not have a hyperlink on it

For example:

Correct:

http://youtu.be/I-a29LOMDTY
